Bumps in the Road

Tense times

Today the wee lady had an appointment for her 4mth check up, which meant another round of vaccinations. Mama was not looking forward to it, as after the first round of vaccinations at 2mths, the wee lady had been very grizzly and unhappy afterwards for the rest of the day.

The good news is that she didn't end up getting her jabs after all. The bad news is that, instead, she had to go and have a blood test.

The wee lady had come with a faint spotted rash the previous week, which we're pretty sure was just a viral rash passed onto her by her big brother. However, in the day or two before her check up, the wee lady also developed some dark tiny red spots on her bottom, which didn't blanch under pressure.  The wee lady seemed completely well, so we thought the rash was just some form of nappy rash and we'd get the doc to check them over.

Unfortunately, the doctor thought that it was a petechial rash, and since the wee lady was otherwise well (no fever, not taking any medication, etc), she was concerned that the rash could be an indication that her body isn't developing enough platelets in her blood.

So off we went to the blood lab instead. It's not the most fun thing to have to hold an infant down while they take blood from her arm, but the wee lady actually did pretty well.  She had a good howl for ten minutes but then was back to her happy self.

Now poor Mama and Dada just have to sit tight until morning to hear back from the doctor.  Although with the wee lady measuring at the 99th percentile for her height and at the 90th percentile for her weight, it's hard to imagine that our happy, thriving baby could have anything wrong with her.
