Stilt houses at the port in Rasaujaya
The taxi arrives on time and we head to the boat dock. It's a tiny little place and the boat doesn't leave till 10 so we have a bit of a wait but it's fine. Fred watches life going by in the stilted wooden houses opposite. Ladies washing themselves and clothes in the dirty brown river. Around 10.45 we eventually leave in a small speed boat with around 8-10 passengers. We whizz through the mangroves and its a nice journey with the cooling breeze.
Reza meets us from the boat in Teluk Milano and off we go in his friend's car to Sukadana. Unfortunately we have a blow out and we begin to see Reza has a good command of the English language as he says F*** rather loudly. He then proceeds to make some stressed phone calls and chain smoke ... a taste of what we have to come perhaps? The owner shows up after a while and we watch on in amusement as four men try to change a tyre and eventually succeed ... the spare is almost as flat as the blown one but we all get in ... and the car doesn't start! Reza is now properly stressed as he is due to pick some other tourists up after their jungle trek. Luckily the owner says we can take the the car he came in and we're off. He drops us at the homestay and heads off again. We settle in and are just going for a walk when he arrives back with the other tourists ... funnily enough it's Justine and Steven who were on our flight from KL! They are the first other westerners we've seen since arrival in Kalimantan. They look dirty and hot but have good reports of the trek although they didn't see any orangs :-(
We have dinner with Reza then he takes us to the beach where he and his friends are doing up an 'eco lodge' with a view to having tourists stay. We go to his house and meet his lovely, but shy, wife, Devika, and have some home made chocolate cake. Then we manage to buy a couple of cans of beer so have a beer with Reza at his aunt's place before heading back to the homestay.
Jungle tomorrow ... come on you orangutans!
