The Roussillon plain
Today we climbed above the Roussillon plain to the remains of the Chateau d'Ultrera and the hermitage nearby. The castle probably dates back to Roman times but what remains is from the 6th and 7th century Visigoth period. It was only eight kilometres and 500 metres up but the climb was very steep, hot and quite tiring. The views at the top were magnificent and made it well worthwhile as did the aperos and picnic in a bucolic shady spot within the castle walls. There are more photos here.
