ST CUTHBERTS

This afternoon I went on a walk around Bensham organised by Newcastle City Guides.  The walk started at 2.30pm.  There were around 20 people who turned up and we were split between 3 guides.  The walk was very interesting and I learned a lot about Bensham.  It is the part of Gateshead which has a large Jewish community and we saw the Synagogue and schools.

My blip shot shows St Cuthberts Church which was the starting point of the walk.  This church was built in 1846. Its architect was John Dobson.who also designed many of the fine buildings over the river in Newcastle. It has been empty for many years after being declared redundant and a number of schemes have been suggested for its use. None of which ever got off the ground. Meanwhile Cotfield Mirrors  - a small craft business -  occupies "The Chancel" of the church.

The walk lasted 1½ hours.  The weather wasn't very pleasant.  There was a very strong cold wind and a few squally showers. Long wait for the bus home as they only run every half hour on a Sunday. I was glad when it turned up so I could get warmed up a bit. 

Neil was here when I got home. Haven't seen much of him though as he has been in his room listening to some sport or other.
