Midland Red D5

Monday was a tram, so Tuesday is a bus, though a much smaller example. The D5 dates from around 1950, and was quite modern in appearance, with the enclosed radiator. The later D5B had doors to enclose the rear platform. I'm not sure if any D5s survive, though the BCLM has a beautifully preserved D9. The BMMO (Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company)/'Midland Red' used to build most of its own buses, though it did buy some standard models when it needed more, an example being the GD6 which was actually a standard Guy model, later than the D5, but it looked much older due to the exposed radiator. The GD6s were based in Dudley, the powerful (if unreliable) engine suiting them to the hilly area.

This model was built from a whitemetal kit 30 or 40 years ago.
