Birding doesn't get more urban than this!
I nearly didn't go out today, but I bit the bullet and went to do a couple of errands at Meadowhall, rewarding myself with the promise of a late afternoon walk back towards the city centre along the river. My target was Sand Martins which nest every year in drainage pipes and crumbling walls along the river, and sure enough there were plenty around. I got one or two distant shots and also managed a Chiffchaff with food in its beak, presumably for waiting young. Also, a posing Pied Wagtail and some artistic ducklings in the late afternoon sunlight. Then I headed over to the main road for the bus back to town. When I checked the bus times app, it said the next bus was due in 9 minutes, so I took the time to look over the wall by the bus stop where there is a small goyt . I did a double take when I saw this freshly-minted Kingfisher sitting on a branch. Needless to say I missed several buses whilst watching this youngster, hoping that a parent might come by and feed it. Not to be. It eventually moved into a tree (see extra photo) before disappearing into some denser foliage. Believe it or not, this spot is bounded by a very busy main road and a main railway line and is only a few yards from a Costa Coffee shop.
