The Cull

About 2500 Eastern Grey Kangaroos will be culled around Canberra between 30 April and 1 August this year. Watch for signs and shooters if you're wandering through bushland. A government representative said, "Culling of overabundant kangaroos is currently the most humane method of population control available to the ACT Government as a responsible land manager." However, they will start trialling contraceptive darts from July. Animal Liberation ACT members intend to intervene in the culling process despite the risk of criminal arrest.


I found a mob of about 30 roos, including this little one, in bushland opposite established housing. I jumped the fence and took photos from about 50m away, studied by the mob leader. After about ten minutes, an man with a dog straining on its lead grabbed their attention and they bounded away.
