Lavoir

This is the lavoir at Pont l'Abbe, basically a rectangular stone pond built across a stream, with a roof for shelter, so fresh water runs in at one end, clothes are washed, and the dirty water runs out through a channel at the other. These used to be the meeting places for the village women to gossip and wash their family's clothes before houses had running water or launderettes were invented.
