King's Dyke Bug Hunt

Pete, Chris and I turned up for the annual King's Dyke Bug Hunt, and were almost overwhelmed by the enormous turn-out. Admittedly it was a nice day in half-term, but there must have been at least three times as many people as normal, and we were definitely understaffed, and with too few pieces of equipment.

The late spring is still holding things back, and it was quite hard to find a lot of insects - no large dragonflies around and only one or two common blue butterflies. The hordes were almost impossible to organise - I'd been planning to do some quiet photography but was roped in as an extra helper.

Despite the sometimes chaotic appearance, a lot of people seemed to really enjoy themselves. There were a few tearful children who hadn't managed to get nets, but only one lad fell into the pond-dipping area (he managed to get absolutely soaked even though the water was very shallow!) If the numbers are like this next year we'll have to draft in re-inforcements and buy some more nets!

Needless to say I felt rather shattered in the evening, hence this back-blip!
