Presenting an Eagle
I had the opportunity recently to award another Eagle Scout award. As the Senior Vice Commander of the local Sons of Union Veterans Camp, I have the opportunity to present various Eagle Scout awards throughout the area at each new Eagle’s court of honor. Since 1910 when the Boy Scouts of America was formed, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War shares many of the same patriotic ideals that all scouts hold close. As a member of both organizations I enjoy being able to serve both at the same time. The Sons of Union Veterans only gives out two awards to youth organizations. One is for ROTC seniors who have displayed distinguished service. The other is for Eagle Scouts as it is the highest rank scouting has to offer. This particular award went to a young man from the Rebuck Boy Scout Troop whose project was adding informative signs to the park that is located below his church. At every Court of Honor, the new Eagle Scout is sworn in by having him repeat the Eagle Scout Pledge with all other Eagle’s in attendance. No matter how many times I stand to do this with the new Eagles, I always get chills down my spine. I am truly honored to be a part of this brotherhood.
