What's the story, morning glory?

I found this on campus at lunch today. Strangely there was a large glob of them growing in a sheltered spot between buildings. This is despite a hard frost. It was a delightful find.

In the meantime, I have a couple of friends who greet people with the above title. It has struck me as overly cheerful on many occasions. Is this just a New Mexican thing?
