Feed coins

Never knew feed can be used in this context. Also I couldn't find any example in which feed has coins as its object in my English-Japanese dictionary. I always associated this verb with animals and plants, as in feed the dog/ the child, not with machines, which is why it still feels like the machine would grow up by getting more and more money whenever I found this kind of notice.

This is the one I found in a laundrette. One day, I met a girl who apparently had fed coins into a broken drier by mistake and so failed to get her money back. She shouted,  'Nooo this machine has eaten my coins!' which was really interesting to me (of course I felt sorry for her at the same time).
