Cleeve House (Tuesday 12th May 2015)

The financial seminar I attended at Cleeve House Conferencing and Retreat Centre provided three cups of filter coffee and a good selection of biscuits including chocolate wafers.

Cleeve House is in Cleeve Seend, near Melksham, with views towards Salisbury Plain, and during the mid-morning break I went outside with my camera to explore the grounds, which included woodland, patio and a field. Only two others ventured outside.

Afterwards I pulled up on Bolland's Hill in Seend to have a look at the Kennet and Avon, as seen in the first Extra. A juvenile swan was on the canal and struggled to climb up onto the grass verge, but tucked into the grass once it had mastered his task, ignoring me and a narrowboat passing through the lock.

At the end of the day I also called at Caen Hill Locks to check on the nesting swans. I'm afraid there was still no sign of the one hatched cygnet, so it must have not survived, probably predated. The second Extra shows the pen swan still patiently incubating her eggs, but since it was over a week since the cygnet was born one has to wonder whether any will hatch.
