I have an all day meeting in Newcastle tomorrow. In theory I could get the red-eye train and arrive in time for the 10am start, but then the risk is I fall asleep after lunch.

So, I decided to travel south today and stay the night. Then I decided to leave a couple of hours earlier than necessary, and visit Durham.

It's one of those places I've passed through on the train and promised to visit, but never got there. Only 12 minutes on the train from Newcastle.

I'm glad I did. The castle/cathedral/university area reminded me of Old Aberdeen or St Andrews.

Ironically, just as the right wing nut jobs in London are planning to ditch the European Convention on Human Rights, Durham is full of posters about events to commemorate the 800 years of Magna Carta. Whilst on the subject of the right wing nutballs, historian David Starkey will be a speaker.

The Blip is the world of the selfie reaching the mid point of the River Wear. At first I thought she was about to phone the rescue boat.
