Know Your Onions

Ramsons or Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum) grows in profusion in Arnside's Ashmeadow Woodlands. Sometimes known as Stinking nanny. An unmistakeable plant if you walk through it.
Many places were named from its Old English root hrmsa. Ramsey Island, Ramsbottom and Ramsholt to name but a few.
Knowing your Onions is not very easy as Alliums are a large and complex genus with over 500 species. Countryside walkers are likely to know Field Garlic, Few- flowered Leek, Crow Garlic, Sand Leek and Chives.
