Terminal Iron Works Sculpture Garden
For over a decade, sculptor Glen Lemesurier has been transforming a bleak and desolate space at Van Horne and Saint-Urbain into a welcoming and interesting artistic space. The Terminal Iron Works Sculpture Garden is located at the northern edge of Mile End just outside the fence on the south side of the railroad tracks.
A 20 year resident of the neighbourhood saw me photographing the work this morning and stopped to talk about her area and the many artists that live there, including the sculptor whose home overlooks the garden. She also pointed out the high end studio across the street that looks like an old broken-down warehouse. The resident proudly boasted that her community has the highest density of artists in "all of North America - even beating out New York".
After chatting for a few minutes, the woman continued on her way along one of the well worn footpaths through the garden leading to a carefully cut "gate" in the chain link fence that is supposed to keep people away from the tracks. Of course, I had to follow the path to see what was on the other side... A lovely park and lots of shopping :)
The afternoon was perfect, too, so Kevin, Justin and I went for a boat ride - the first one in nearly two years. We travelled down the St. Lawrence River to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and back. A perfect day, capped off by a lovely dinner at the marina.
