Roof People
I had better shots from today but not more important. For any of you who have read or are reading The Yacoubian Building by Alaa al-Aswany this may remind you of the scenes that take place atop the building. People live and carry on their lives here in sheds/homes that are sometimes one metre by one metre or sometimes two by two metres. They bring home their shopping in plastic carrier bags, as shown by the lady in red above, and wash their dishes in make shift kitchens like the one in the centre mid-ground, tucked in behind the wall. All around the faded art deco buildings of Downtown Cairo, like the Grand Hotel, and the Hausman-esque apartment buildings like the one across the street from the hotel, both built in better times somehow continue to stand proud with little attention paid to their fabric.
