Plumpton Rocks

Called here today for the first time, although I must have passed the sign hundreds of times. A few miles out of Harrogate on the way to Wetherby.

A Grade 2 site of outstanding and special historic interest. Essentially a small park with a lake and very dramatic outcrops of millstone grit rocks covered in ferns, moss and trees. Plenty of paths to follow, but generally left as it is; no cafe or toilets. A very tranquil spot, will visit again.

These rocks (at that time called Plompton Rocks after the village) were painted by Turner in the late 1700s for the 1st Earl of Harewood, albeit from a different angle. The paintings still hang in Harewood House today.
