Acorn Woodpecker

Melanerpes formicivorus

This fellow was hanging out near the hole in the tree that holds probably 12 - 20 woodpeckers.  I watched them all come out of the hole the other night and was amazed how they flew out one at a time and landed on a nearby tree, squawking and causing a fuss.  This collection of woodpeckers in one place or within a short distance of each other s called "Castling."  Woodpeckers are one of a few species of birds that will take care of expectant females, care for each others eggs, help raise the young while the males find food for the collective.

They are quite amazing.
