Melk and the abbey

Melk is a beautiful town which nestles into the hillside below a world famous monastic site, sitting on a rocky outcrop above the river Danube. The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II Margrave of Austria gave one of his castles to the Benedictine monks. It hosts a school (dating back to the 12th Century) and is famous for its extensive manuscript collection, housed in an incredible library.
Bike and boat tour day 2: Grein to Melk, 46km.
