Speicherstadt

The Speicherstadt is an old warehouse area of the Hamburg port that was built approx. 120 years ago, mainly from bricks. The canals between the warehouses were used to transport the goods on little flat boats - to and from the big ships.
Most of the warehouses have been converted into offices and some house exhibitions including the world's largest miniature railway. But there are still warehouses for oriental carpets and rugs as well as for tea, coffee and spices.
It is one of my favourite quarters of Hamburg.
