The London Charterhouse

The London Charterhouse is a complex of buildings in Smithfield dating back to the 14th cntury. It takes its name from a Carthusian priory, founded in 1371 and dissolved in 1537. In 1611 it was acquired by Thomas Sutton who had made his fortune from 2 coal mines near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Sutton bequeathed sufficient money to set up and maintain an almshouse, chapel and school.

I came here today for the first time for a Court meeting with the Worshipful Company of Constructors and then for the Companions Lunch. A tour of the buildings by the Master of Charterhouse was a bonus.
