These birds, known elsewhere as Pacific golden plovers, regularly stop at Hawaii on their travels before returning to their breeding grounds in Siberia. This one is in full breeding plumage.

We saw this at the end of the 'Chain of Craters' road which goes from Kilauea Caldera to the sea, passing recent lava flows, craters and rock carvings.
