Walk to Talgarth

It was day three of the Talgarth Walking Festival today, I went last year and enjoyed it and made sure I booked again for this year.  It’s in a beautiful spot at the northern end of the Brecon Beacons, and it’s a festival which has a great friendly atmosphere.

Today’s walk was 13 miles from Crickhowell to Talgarth, and the start was a real killer as it was a climb straight up from Crickhowell.  First to Table Mountain, yes Wales has its own, and then on to Pen Cerrig-calch, by the time we’d made it to this point we were in the mist and the wind was howling.  The forecast did predict that it would clear up around midday, so we lived in hope that we’d eventually get to see some views.  This was the second time I’d been on this mountain and I didn’t see anything last time either, I’m beginning to think the Black Mountains are a bit of a jinx on me.  Anyways we carried on to Pen Allt-mawr, still the mist was down, and so on we went before we had our lunch stop.  At this point we thought of going on to Waun Fach but the mist didn’t look like it was going to shift so we gave that a miss.

Ironically as we started to descend things started to get a little clearer, and we had fantastic views of the Dragon’s Back as we looked towards Talgarth.  One final refreshment stop before the final push home to Talgarth, which involved walking through Pwll-y-Wrach Nature Reserve with the famed Witches Pool, you may have seen this on the BBC’s Secret Britain TV programme with Ellie Harrison.

A great walk with good company and a good leader.  All the feedback from the group was very positive about the Talgarth Walking Festival, I’m sure it will continue to grow.
