This is the winning post for the Kiplingcotes Derby. The oldest horse race in England. The race isn't recognised or run under Jockey Club rules and anyone taking part is then exempt from taking part in races that are.
It's been going since the early sixteenth century and should it ever miss a year it cannot be run again. During the war years the course, which is some four miles, was walked every year.
I've been coming here for forty years and had never heard of it. You learn something every day.
