High Greenas

This is a green lane in Lower Swaledale (it is not an adopted road - the tarmac was laid to improve access to the farm at the top). These wide tracks between walled fields give access from the sheltered farms onto the moors - presumably so flocks could be moved onto the moors to graze in summer without having to cross the hay meadows. Now they are bridleways and great for dog walking: the walls stop the dogs from disturbing livestock and - since they go nowhere except the open moor - there is no traffic.

For similar reasons, they make for good bird-watching: lapwings, oystercatchers, curlews, stonechats and meadow piptpits today.

It is nice when things made a long time ago with pure functionality in mind can be re-purposed for the modern world like this.
