Gardenia buds

I love the smell of gardenias but gave up buying them some years ago. The buds always seem to turn brown and fall off. I saw some on offer the other week in the garden centre though and couldn't resist getting one.  Strangely one of the flowers has now come out pale cream and looking beautiful. Most of the others are as in the extra  photo a deeper cream with brown edges. Strange as both have had exactly the same conditions on the same plant!   Any green-fingered blippers out there with suggestions ?
