May Day

The annual dancing up of the sun by the Morris men who traditionally perform this at Wandlebury, went on today as always. Sadly Henry and I weren't there, for obvious reasons, but Jon and Mollie were, for their last year, so Jon took this great picture and sent it to me.

I got the feeling from speaking to him that it was a bitter sweet occasion. Apparently the whole cppf team were there - they aren't usually - and they had moved the location from one side of the field to the other - why? To make it 'their' event, or what? This drew negative comments from the dancers but I wonder if cppf took any notice. They were selling bacon sandwiches - but only if you'd pre- booked them. So they are clearly trying to cash in, probably quite unsuccessfully, on what was once a simple tradition, that everyone with a genuine interest, got up once a year at 4.30am to enjoy.

My day was Morris-men less but enjoyable just the same.

Personally, I think it would be nice for those Morris Men to consider a change next year. Perhaps to dance the sun up on the Magog Downs...I know the chap who is newly appointed to take care of this area - and I am sure The Magog Trust would welcome the extra visitors!
