A Hard Day's Walk

I dread to think how far we have walked today. It's a Bank Holiday in Italy which meant that many of the tourist sites were closed for the day. But this being Rome, there is still plenty to see. We went to the Forum, or at least, the part that was open. We walked to the church of St Clemente which is fascinating; you go down a flight of stairs into a lower level to find that the church has been built on top of a former mediaeval one. But it doesn't stop there; you go further down to find that the mediaeval church was built on top of a former Roman one! After a good pasta lunch, we walked up the Palatine Hill, then went to look through the secret keyhole. It's something which has spread by word of mouth; you follow some directions until you come to a big door in a wall, look through the keyhole and there in front of you is this amazing view of.....? Ah, but I can't say; you'll have to go and see for yourself. (If anyone wants, I can give you the directions.) Then a wander through Trastevere, and finally to Campo di Fiore, a bustling market area where we sat and watched the world go by, with a well earned drink.

A long walk back to the apartment and picked up some good Italian sausages on the way. They'll be on the grill in a moment. And the picture? The Constantine Arch near the Colosseum.
