Why did I come in here?

Woody and family

Madam took me out for an airing today. Wonderful change of scenery which gave me an opportunity for a decentish blip. This is a Greater Spotted Woodpecker feeding it's young. We heard what we thought was a very agitated blackbird, suddenly we spotted the parent flash away from the tree. There was a hole with a pair of irate chicks looking out and mumbling bad things about parental care these days. The parent soon came back and was greeted warmly. I couldn't crop any closer or the image would be too small for publication, please have a look at the Flickr link to see the original.

I only had the kit lens the 18-55 Nikon. Now a lot of people rush off and buy heaps of lenses, when this little beauty will do quite well for newbies. The original image allowed me to blow up the centre to show the pecker, despite being taken from about 35 metres away. I think that says a lot about the lens with vibration reduction and the sensor in the D3100.

On the Flickr connection you can see where the Woodpeckers have been hunting for bugs. Plus a few wild orchids and a wood carver making a very good wild boar, it's a tactile piece of work, especially the way he has carved the fur.
