At the end of a piano lesson, we opened the door to see my student's mother looking up into a tree. "The most beautiful bird I've ever seen!" she said. There, in a tall pine directly over my house, was this Yellow-crowned Night-Heron.

For the past couple of years they've been nesting in the neighborhood. They nest in colonies, and last year there were three nests in nearby pine trees, one street over. Fourteen chicks hatched in those nests. I'm hoping they choose one of my pine trees this year. But if they do, I'll never get anything done; I'll be out watching the herons all the time. :)
