Crossing the Berezina

In 1838 Csar Nicolas I commissioned the German painter Peter von Hess to decorate the walls of a large hall in the winter palace, the imperial family's city residence in St. Petersburg. This painting is one of the twelve paintings representing the most famous battles of the 1812 war.
