HISTORIC
The main street in the town of Berwick just south of the Scottish border is dominated by the Town Hall and its impressive tower.
First time visitors can easily confuse the Town Hall with the parish church of Holy Trinity, because of the tower and its ring of bells
Holy Trinity Parish Church was built around 100 years earlier between 1648 and 1652 and as one of few churches built in the Cromwellian period, is unusual in having been constructed of stone from the town’s original 13th century castle.
Because the Town Hall possessed a fine tower its appearance was far more akin to a holy sanctuary
History suggests the church on the other hand at that time lacked much of the finery now traditional a place or worship
The Town Hall, initially housed the town’s prison on the top floor. It remains unique because the tower above the council chamber has a ring of eight bells and a curfew bell.
