St.Andrew's Suspension Bridge, River Clyde

Walk 3 of Walking Glasgow's waterways today took us from the McLennan Arch at Glasgow Green to Dalmarnock Bridge and the Commonwealth Games Village. This is not the most attractive stretch of the river but historically there was much of interest. The north side of the river was the site  of the cotton mills and factories in the 19th and 20th centuries. The workers lived in Hutcheson Town and Gorbals on the south side and this bridge was built in 1856 for people to cross to get to work, replacing a ferry. It is a fine piece of engineering and architecture, the gold topped columns particularly interesting.
Towards Dalmarnock the building and development called Clyde Gateway is the legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and is regenerating the whole of the East End of the city in a programme which will be on going for many years to come
