The sign to Go!

Our town is littered with these pedestrian sign.  On one stretch of road there are no fewer than six sets which can be exasperating if they all turn red!  I can see the merit in them but often people press the button to stop the traffic and, as the road is clear, they walk across leaving the motorists to watch their backs disappearing up the road whilst stuck unnecessarily at the red light!  This is a busy stretch of road but perhaps another sign should be added.. 'Think before you Press'?

Anyway...... this is one example of signs in the environment which attempt to control our behaviour.  This particular one is deemed a 'shared space' but I don't see how it's any more shared than a normal pelican crossing - it's just a more open area but still controlled by lights!
