Bird Spotting
Today, ably assisted by Mr PB, I did my first ever formal Bird Survey for our local Bird Study Group. My site consists of an area of allotments with a few other small habitats around the edge. We recorded 57 birds of 18 different species. This is probably an underestimate of numbers because you can never be sure whether you are seeing the same bird twice. They do tend to fly about a lot. I didn't take my camera as I didn't want to be distracted from the survey.
Afterwards, we had a trip onto the moorland fringe as I wanted to see if there were any Green Hairstreak butterflies around. However as it turned very cold, we were onto a loser there, although I did hear my first Cuckoo of the year and got the usual sightings of Watervoles. We also got a few sightings of this well-camouflaged Common Sandpiper on the banks of the reservoir.
