National Donut Day
Before I joined Blipfoto, I wouldn't have given a second glance at the ad in our local paper about celebrating National Donut Day at Rocket Donuts, a local business.
I've never been keen on donuts, preferring other sweets -- dark chocolate, homemade fruitcake, tart lemon treats, small-batch ice cream -- but I didn't want to miss the local observance of an important national event.
This made it hard to miss -- and full marks to Rocket Donuts for their consistent imagery, making it easy to remember the store's name!
There clearly had been a run on maple bars by the time I stopped by mid-morning, but there still were plenty of choices, including these appropriately-named donuts and their famous maple bacon bars.
I bought these (an apple fritter and a cake donut topped with chocolate and sliced almonds) to share with Phil after lunch. We both preferred the apple fritter, which was delicious with our post-lunch cups of tea. (It was much less photogenic, however...)
Another new experience is on for Saturday -- I'll take photos and buy fresh produce at the Bellingham Farmers Market as usual, and then Phil and I will go to the Bellingham Highland Games. Highlights include a beer garden (Boundary Bay Brewery has brewed a special Highland Reserve Scotch Ale for the event) and local wine tasting, massed pipe and drum bands, men in kilts, and much more -- check out the schedule!
