Famous Names

I am currently reading a biography of E. A Bowles, master gardener and Crocus King of the first half of the 20th century.  Many famous names of horticulture feature, notably Reginald Farrer who championed the cause of Alpine plants and gardens.  Farrer, a larger than life character, was often controversial.  Somewhat less so, but still a feisty lady, was Ellen Willmott who owned a famous garden at Warley Place.  The plant that features today is Aethionema armenum 'Warley Ruber'.  Reputedly originating at Warley Place, it was certainly named for that connection.  It is an easy plant in a sunny place given well drained soil, the flowers last for several weeks.
