Literary doors 3

(or in this case a gate.)

I have decided that I know enough literary doors to extend this game to at least a week.

Yesterday?   Yes, John Buchan.    His brother, Walter Buchan was Town Clerk of Peebles.  The house shown was a long-time Buchan household, and John spent many happy long holidays here as a boy and man.

Today?   Clearly, the likes of dear Knotmann make all this look too easy.  So we shall stretch things a bit!   This was the country residence of today's literary figure.   He wrote among other things about the Roman Empire.   In his Edinburgh home two much more famous literary figures once met during the winter of 1786-87.     Go!
