Macquarie Bicentenary
Today I attended a reenactment of the first church service held west of the Blue Mountains.
This was when Governor Lachlan Macquarie, his wife and entourage had made camp at the junction of River Lett and Cox's River, at what is now Glenroy.
It was held at Hartley and was attended by Dame Marie Bashir, who gave the address.
I know how popular she was in her role as governor of NSW and after hearing her I can completely understand why.
Unassuming and unpretentious, she's passionate about the governor Lachlan Macquarie and spoke, standing, for an hour and a half.
It was freezing and windy..
Although she had notes she largely ad libbed.
At 85, most impressive.
