Between fen and mountains

Tethering the horses

I took our friends to the garrison village of Villefranche which is an UNESCO world heritage site.  By lucky chance it was the day of the transhumance of the Merens ponies.  Each spring they make the journey from the coast to the high pasture of the Cerdagne plateau, a journey that takes around eleven days.  The horses and accompanying riders came off the mountain for watering and  refreshment and it provided quite a spectacle.  In the afternoon, we walked to the Cascade St Vincent and the Cascade des Anglais.  Some of the small footbridges had been swept away and it was only when we got back that we saw that access had been forbidden by an arrêté municipal in January!
