Black beach at Borgarnes

After spending the early morning of the 10th April watching the Northern lights ( I did nt go to bed until 4 am ) we were up and out of the house early. Snow had been falling and left a fresh layer and the temperature had fallen to -7.4. The sun was up and the snow and ice had started to melt as we headed for the Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland.
1. Stop at the N1 café for tea and cookies and kleinur ,a fried, twisted doughnut . Meant we could use the toilet for free too otherwise there is a charge. Not many public toilets around so we made sure to use the ones in cafes and garages.
2. Drive along the R54 alongside the Mountains. Pretty icy and glad we had snow tyres. Missed our turning so headed over the mountain route that had just been cleared by the snowplough. snow s high as the car on one side.
3. Reached the town of Olafsvik. Had lunch in a very nice café. Very friendly staff especially John, a Liverpool supporter who travels to the uk a few times a year to watch them play.
4. walked through the snow, around the harbour and at sunbathing in the sun.
5.Carried on driving round the tip of the Peninsula.  Stopping at beaches and viewpoints along the way. Sun still shining.
6. walked to a lighthouse and sea stacks.
7. Walked to a Viking statue and sea arch, no puffins but plenty of fulmers.
8. Drove home, weather changed suddenly, the dry snow blowing across the road and freezing in our path. Very strong winds, glad to be back in the accommodation and into the hot tub to calm down.

The day of the 11th the winds were still extremely strong but we went out and had a meal at the Grill house followed by a visit to a craft centre where we bought a few bits and pieces from the craft workers that were there, including a needlefelt Easter egg. We were blown along the Black sand beach and found a tiny playground that had been created by a local man out of recycled materials. Great fun :)
