Song bird

I’ve rushed out of the house a few times in the last few days, camera in hand, to try to identify the source of some lovely and unusual (in the setting) birdsong. This time I managed to find it – I think it’s a wren, although I hadn’t recognized the song, perhaps because it was so unexpected, in the middle of Copacabana (we have them all around up in the hills and they give me immense pleasure). Welcome to Copa!

The population of turtle doves is also increasing – my mother used to enjoy the way scores of them congregated on the rooftops opposite her window, but that was before the cat population in the vila started multiplying. I’m amazed that a doughty couple has now turned into half a dozen birds – not sure how they’ve survived the evil cat that lives opposite, who has slaughtered many of them in the past. Our two cats are long past hunting – as another neighbour said, they’re in the queue for their pensions.
