Norman in origin
St Mary, Kirkburn, East Yorkshire
A Norman font, a Norman doorway, chancel arch and corbel table. The nave and chancel date from 1130 – 1140 with a bellcote.
The base of today’s west tower are thought to have been built a little later. The belfry stage was added in around 1200 and the top stage was not added until the early c15. Excavations have shown that this first church had an apsidal chancel but, as was so often the case, it was replaced at some stage by a rectangular one that was easier to maintain and offered more space. The foundations of this rectangular structure have also been discovered.
