Was A Rotten Place.
Mawarden Court. 17th century house at Stratford -sub-Castle. The Blue Plaque by the gate reads that William Pitt, aka Pitt the Elder, Earl of Chatham and the Great Commoner once lived here. He was Prime Minister from 1766-68, and MP for Old Sarum. Old Sarum was a `Rotten Borough`, with 3 houses and 7 voters. Elected 2 MP`s. Pitt and a mate used to get underneath the Rotten Tree across from Mawarden and do the honours.
Blackadder gave him a mention in the Third series with "he`s about as useful as a catflap in an elephant house".
PS. The rotten tree died in 1905.
PPS. The gardens at Mawarden are open on June 28th, in aid of ngs and St. Lawrence Church.
