The young lambs and calves were probably later able to witness a beautiful sky as the sun set behind the island of Arran across the Clyde. Earlier, to the south, the huge rock ‘Paddy’s Milestone’ (Ailsa Craig) had loomed out of a silvery sea with the distant coastline of Northern Ireland beyond and on the drive home there were still patches of snow visible on the far off Scottish mountains.
The sounds of sea and woodland birds including the first Willow Warblers of the year accompanied our picnic as we sat overlooking a blue sea with golden gorse and unfurling bluebells and violets growing profusely nearby. The familiar grounds of Culzean Castle and its relatively quiet footpaths, unexplored by the majority of visitors, enabled me to continue my wild flower count as I used to do on my monthly visits with a friend when we got to know the locations of many fairly rare plants. It was a day when I felt fortunate to be able to try to relax.
