Country Lane...

I love the country lanes at this time of year when the hedgerows are laden with wild flowers. This is one such lane in Guernsey and 'yes' it is 2 way! Gateways are the places to reverse into! People are usually courteous! Here are the Guernsey rules for hedge cutting......

Occupiers of land bordering public roads and land owners of unoccupied property whose hedges border public roads, are required by law to cut and trim the hedges for which they are responsible. Constables and Douzaines of several parishes, including St Peter Port require that during the first fifteen days of June and the last fifteen days of September, people responsible cut hedges back to conform with the following specifics:

?up to a height of 12ft from the road surface where the road is used by vehicles. (This includes roads and foot paths)
?hedges which are up to a height of 8ft from the road surface where the road is not ordinarily used by vehicles.

Note:
Hedges include trees and branches of trees, bushes, and all kinds of plants overhanging a public road. (This includes plants growing on walls and banks)
It is also a strict requirement that occupiers and land owners remove all material cut from such hedges immediately after cutting from the public roads and footpath.

Inspection

The Constables (and/or Douzainiers) will inspect the roads at their discretion soon after 15th June and 30th September in order to check that the appropriate hedges have been cut according to the requirements.

Failure to comply with the above requirements can result in a fine not exceeding £1,000.
