At last - they've found it !
I had once seen goldfinches on the sunflower seeds so I bought them a niger seed feeder as I was told they love niger seeds. I put it in the buddleia bush rather than on the feeding station as the smaller birds congregate there when the starlings are on the feeding station en masse. It had been there at least 3 weeks with nothing happening - then, this afternoon I noticed the level of seed has dropped - something is eating it! Sure enough they arrived a few minutes later - two goldfinches! Not just a quick visit either - they stayed long enough for me to grab some shots with the compact through the window then fetch the A77 and 500mm lens, gently open the window so that I could get a clear view, and fire off several shots - still they didn't fly off so they are obviously more interested in the seed than what is going on 20ft away in the house.
Quite made my day - I am easily pleased!
