Lost in translation I

The sign translates (loosely) as 'old wood island, entry forbidden'. I asked my son (15) his understanding of the word 'island' & I got back a load of geographical mumbo jumbo (good to know he's paying attention in class) the gist of it being, land surrounded by water. The Germans clearly have a different meaning for island as there is definitely no water surrounding these trees...
