The Lupin Field

The lupin field, or St Peter's Church Field, Terwick, about a mile east of Rogate village on the A272, is a rainbow of colour just now. This is only a small corner of the display.

The field was given to the National Trust about 1939 by two local squires and was used during the war to grow crops. Afterwards it was returned to lupins. Local villagers and the National Trust worked on it a few years ago when the lupins were in decline, bringing it back to its former glory. The lupins are left to seed and sometimes given a helping hand with the addition of new seeded strips, but nothing if not resourceful, there is now a long display of escapees on the A272 verges. It's become a bit of a tourist attraction, and this year is in full flower for the Jubilee celebrations.
